Ahoy!
I'm currently living in Guangdong province, teaching at a university and an English school. I have decided to move to Zhuhai for the second semester--sometime in February.
Does anyone know anything about American TPR? I've seen that one person has given it a 3 star rating in the A-Z guide...but has anyone worked there? or known someone who has worked there? Any other schools that might be good to check out?
Any little bit of information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Hey, I would do a search
Hey,
I would do a search here:

Always take things with a grain of salt, though...
TPR is a good a pretty well
TPR is a good a pretty well run school, but like all english training schools in Zhuhai the pay is very low (4000rmb/5000rmb+). With training schools you will do mostly weekend work for kids and during the week day evenings it will be adult classes. As far as i know, most teachers at TPR are generally happy. I would give schools like EF & fountain a big wide berth due to their less than professional attitude. If you are looking for some bigger money in the teaching biz here in Zhuhai, i would be looking at the universities (8,000/10,000+, if you have the experience), but they are located 30 mins out of Zhuhai.
Do unto others, as others do unto you.
Do you want to teach kids or
Do you want to teach kids or adults. TPR, fountain, EF are primarily geared towards kids. I personally think GLV is one of the best places to work in town. Their students are mostly adults/young adults. Oriental is also okay but its a fair piece out of town.

I made the mistake of reading really awful things about GLV just after suggesting elsteachersboard.com, but I totally second what orlog said. As a five-year employee, I know it's not perfect- but I've only been treated with respect and honesty in my time there. My own two cents' worth, at least...

I worked at GLV and its ok.You are treated respectfully and if you teach well, you will have a long career there.
You might have to join the
You might have to join the "cult" if you want to work at GLV though! I heard they sacrifice virgins there on a weekly basis...
eek! every review i have
eek! every review i have read about glv is so intense! i don't really know what to think about it.
but i think i will seriously consider tpr. something about tpr strikes me as organized and reliable. kind of like starbucks--no charm, not particularly good, but you know exactly what you are getting yourself into.
i am working at a few different places right now. one of them constantly leaves me teetering on the brink of insanity due to organizational chaos. something about boring reliablity seems very attractive these days...
thanks so much for all your suggestions! i'm sure i will be bothering you with more questions as i start making arrangements to move.

Aw, c'mon Zurdo...that's not fair! I'm a married guy! (And if that particular rumor were true, Big Jon would still be there!) ;)

It was the best experience out of the 3 schools I taught at in 2000...The administration is wonderful and I know a teacher who has made Zhuhai her home and continues to teach there...she loves it...

I thought perhaps you'd have looked at it before this...but in the meantime, I decided to delete it from the web...I will personally contact you and send you some photos...okay?P.S...I hadn't gotten enough traffic to it and thought I might as well spend my time elsewhere instead of spending money each month to keep it going. Sorry. Anyway, I heartily recommend the TPR school...Contact them and see if they have openings for the spring semester...Contact a teacher by the name of Kamali and she'll tell you I used to work there...
Just out of curiosity,
Just out of curiosity, GRL...why did you only stay at these three schools an average of four months at a time?
KellyBelly, I highly
KellyBelly, I highly recommend TPR to you. I have been a teacher there for 20 months and I have never had any problems with them. I think you would enjoy working at TPR.
thanks for your help,
thanks for your help, everyone!
i went to an interview (more like a let's-make-sure-she's-not-crazy meeting) and i will be starting at TPR next semester. woop! tpr seems like a very nice place.
i am sure i gaped stupidly at some of you walking down the street. i'm just not used to seeing non-chinese people! EVER! haahha. please forgive me! i couldn't help myself!
