What do you mean by direct bank to bank transfer?

JJ is correct, no HSBC in

JJ is correct, no HSBC in Zhuhai. However, try East Asia Bank on Yin Bin Nan Lu, across from Yin Bin Square, where KFC and McDonalds are located. I doubted it very much the system will give you what you need. Option: Western Union, but expensive to send money. Best thing to do is to open an account in Macau, Bank of China or HSBC, there is no direct transfer if I understand you correctly. However, with proper information, such as the swift code (very important)and bank acccount #, you should have no problem getting your money from North America within 24 hours.

Hi! We use ICBC and we've done inward telegraphic transfers from overseas bank to Zhuhai. There is no problem but you need to make sure you provide the relevant information so that it goes to your bank account. OUr initial transfer we had problems only because the 'relevant information' required by the bank was not just account name and account number BUT you must make sure you provide the accurate bank card number. Very strange system to rely on the bank card number. SUggest also you open an account in the bigger branch where I am sure you can find someone who can speak a bit of English. The currency had to be exchanged to RMB at the counter once it was remitted here. Hope this helps.

I have HSBC in HK and BOC in

I have HSBC in HK and BOC in Zhuhai. Bank transfers inward (to mainland China) are no problem, around three days to clear HKD transactions, and up to 5 days for Euro transactions. Outgoing I don't know as I'm yet to try, however domestic transfers so far have not proved to be problematic.

Inward remittance is no

Inward remittance is no problem, you can use any bank. Bank of China, Bank of Communications, ICBC, Construction Bank, whatever. Just go into any bank with your passport and start and open an account. Outward remittance, on the other hand, is another story...

If you need to transfer money out of China, the best way is to ask a local person to do it for you. They are allowed to exchange up to $20,000USD equiv per year no questions asked. Otherwise, if you want to exchange/remit the money yourself, you will need the following.

1. Passport
2. Employment Contract
3. Alien Employment Certificate
4. Monthly salary statement with a "red stamp" from your employer
5. Tax receipt (税票) from the government proving that you have paid income tax on your salary.

If you have all of the above, you can exchange up to the amount of your salary which you can prove you earned and paid tax on in China.

Another option is to go to Hong Kong or Macao but then there are restrictions on the amount of cash you can carry out of the mainland. I believe it is $5000USD equiv of foreign currency or $2000USD equiv of RMB. You can most likely get away with taking more but there is the risk of being searched and having your money confiscated.

It is not easy to get your money out of the country. They don't mind you bring money in but they certainly don't like you taking it out.

Can you transfer out the

Can you transfer out the same amount you brought in, if you have records, instead of proving your salary?

I was told over a year ago

I was told over a year ago by BOC in Shanghai that you could transfer out if you could prove that you transfered in the same amount, but recently I spoke with Agricultural Bank of China in Zhuhai and they told me that nowadays the transfer out control is tougher, the maximum allowed per person is 3K US, if you try to get around it by doing it everyday, after the 3rd day, they'll ask you to get the permission from government (I assume it's either Central Bank or some department that controls transfer). I could transfer into BOC over a year ago without any problem and I could withdraw either in US or RMB.

Michael

What about if you had bought

What about if you had bought property a few years ago, just sold and made a good profit. How can you wire that out of the country? Not that I have to concern myself with this problem right now.

entroprolific is right. If

entroprolific is right. If you're transferring money into China you can use any bank, but it has to be under 10,000 U.S. or you need to jump through a few more hoops with some local Bureau. I know that if you change money at the bank from a foreign currency into RMB, all you need to do is keep the slip they give you and you can exchange that amount back into the original currency. don't know a thing about wiring money out though. Sorry.

I have transferred in more

I have transferred in more than 10,000 US on two occasions within the past couple of months with no trouble at all. I simply wired it in and only needed SWIFT #, Account #, and the account holders name.

I went today to Jusco and couldn't find the Construction Bank just across from Jusco, where's it? Where's this labor building and EF? I looked around and couldn't find either one, are they on the main street (Phoenix rd) or on a cross road?

CC: when I was in Shanghai,

CC: when I was in Shanghai, BOC's staff told me that if I used wired in money to buy a property and later sold the same property with profit, I can wire the property sale's amount out without problem, once I can proof it (show the paper trail of all the money), but Chinese legislation changes constantly, you could confirm it with BOC in Zhuhai or any other bank, just make sure that the bank you go to is:
- their main branch in Zhuhai (so most likely you'll get correct/knowledgeable info)
- can have deposit/wire US/foreign currency

Michael

Western Union in Macau is

Western Union in Macau is your best bet for wiring money out of the country.

As I mentioned before, there

As I mentioned before, there are limits to the amount of cash you are allowed to carry out of China ($5000 USD equiv of foreign currency, or $2000 USD equiv of RMB). If you're doing under $5000 then why not just use the Western Union in Zhuhai? No need to go to Macau.
