Fruit-peel or not peel
Tags:
A simple question. I was wondering if it is advised to peel the skin from apples, etc. in China. I have been washing them with soap and water and not peeling.
But now I am wondering if the chemicals they use get into the skin.
Any experts on this subject out there?
Thanks

Now that's why I NEVER eat
Now that's why I NEVER eat fruit. =)
What I usually do is to soak
What I usually do is to soak the fruit and vegetables in water for 15-30 min, then rinse with water, if you don't mind additional work, peel it to be safe (pesticide on the fruit's skin). I was told that if there are not too much pesticide, simple soaking will solve the problem, but if there's too much, the chemicals will penetrate the skin, and peeling will remove most of chemicals.

Michael

...now you have raised a point which i have never considered. since i got here i have had fruit but never contemplated peeling it because of chemicals. Are we talking a must do thing here or just being safe? soaking it for 30 mins? i thought eating fruit is easy, its now become more complicated than calling out for a takeaway.
Lol wow there's just so many
Lol wow there's just so many things to worry about =| Water quality, food quality.. I eat many fruits everyday being a vegan but now i think i'll just peel it to be on the safe side.
eat fruits which don't need
eat fruits which don't need peeling. like banana.
there's a saying that most of the nutrition stay on the skin. it's a matter of eating in chemical or losing the nutrition.
Here's a thought... do you
Here's a thought... do you think the chemicals only stay on the skin or can they get through to the fruit inside? If we take away the peel are we really getting rid of the chemicals?

I don't like peeled Apples they taste funny .. :)
If we get so concerned about chemicals then do you think the restaurants rinse the vegetables for 1/2 hour before cooking? i know it might be not good for long run but I eat for taste first and then for health :)

Good point Anu, i dont think
Good point Anu, i dont think the restaurants will be as concerned as us. But its a good point to take note rather than eat first and think about health later. You wont be saying that when you start to walk funny.... with out having a few beers before!

Talking of fruit, how is one supposed to eat a mangosteen? I bought one today and it was rock solid. I couldn't even cut it with a knife!
I've been told that if your
I've been told that if your are to buy a mangosteen, you should squeeze it before you buy it. The softer it is, the fresher it is. You should in theory be able to peel it like a mandarin or clementine. The flesh inside is white, there should be about five pieces. I guess your rock solid one may have been there a while.
Thanks for the tip! I think
Thanks for the tip! I think I will buy my next mangosteen from Jusco rather than the roadside vendors....

Hi, I've lived in China for 11 years and I almost eat fruits every day with the skin/peel on and I'm still alive. So my friend take it easy and enjoy it you never know how , when , or with what your going to die.

guess washing it well should do the trick (with soap?? that sounds odd.)
we will never know the harm they do inside our bodies.

In Jusco, you can purchase a special fruit and vege cleaner (bit like a detergent bottle )..My wife soaks the food in this, mixed with filtered water for about 30 mins and the chinese swear by it !
If you ever look at the
If you ever look at the ingredients for those overpriced fruit and vegetable washes, you'll see the main ingredients are water and alcohol. So Save yourself some time and money and just drink more alcohol.

Its called Kami and is avail at jusco. There is no alcohol !
The chemicals may not
The chemicals may not overtly affect you immediately, but the accumulative effect just might be fatal. Besides that, I have not seen Port-a-Janes in any field or orchard ... so, if you're careful enough to wipe YOUR bottom, you should be wise enough to wash first and then peel.
Surely pesticides are inside
Surely pesticides are inside the fruit as well. Why just the peel ?
i never peel the skin
i never peel the skin either, because im too lazy to peel it . hahaha......
What do you do in your home
What do you do in your home country? I bet they use heaps of pesticides where you come from too.I have seen the pesticides used in grape growing for instance in Australia. Whilst they may use more toxic chemicals here I would be more worried about e0coli in vegatable "skins" ie carrots than in fruit. Still I sometimes peel an apple sometimes dont -its more how I feel rather than the pesticide issue
I would rather trust an
I would rather trust an almost fresh piece of local fruit than something that has been artifically held out of season. Also many apples have a wax to make em look nice, so washing isn't that easy. I would be more worried about the water you wash it in. Peeling everything to be safe has got to be just 1 step away from being paranoid. Eat more bugs and eventually you will get a tolerance to everything .... it works for the Chinese.
