new laws regarding foreigners working in Zhuhai

Tags:

Hi there, I recently heard from a friend about some changes to the laws regarding foreigners working here. One of these laws states that institutions employing foreigners must provide full coverage medical insurance for their employees. I've been working in Zhuhai for several years and my school has always provided accident insurance but not medical insurance for occasional visits due to colds, fever, etc. Can anyone provide some information about the new laws & where the info can be found online or in print (preferably in English, but Chinese will be helpful as well)? I would appreciate any info, thanks!!

Hi Gunnie, Institution

Hi Gunnie,

Institution employing foreigners may provide social insurance (including endowment insurance, medical insurance and work injury insurance)to its employees, but it is not compulsory.

Different city has its own policies governing social insurance payment. I suggest you call 12333 to consult with Zhuhai Employment and Social Insurance Bureau or visit their website: http://www.zhls.gov.cn/index.jsp

Hi Helen, thanks so much for

Hi Helen, thanks so much for your info, I appreciate it!

I asked a Chinese friend to check the website for me & the only info she could find regarding this is as follows:

As of May of this year the social insurance that is provided for all Chinese employees has been extended to foreign employees as well. I'm not sure of the details of this insurance but it covers part of your medical expenses for hospital visits. The monthly payment is based on your salary, with the employer paying a higher percentage of the premium. It also includes a pension scheme. And if you transfer to another company your account also transfers as well.

The website did not state that this is compulsory but only that it is available now.

If you plan to stay in Zhuhai or anywhere in China for an extended amount of time, this would definitely be beneficial. The accident insurance that is usually provided by schools is helpful if you only plan to stay for a year or so and if you don't often get sick. Otherwise, I suggest discussing it with your employer.

I hope this is helpful. If anyone can add any other info please don't hesitate, thanks!

Hello, I think you are

Hello, I think you are talking about the "shebao". It is an insurance that covers work related accidents. It is so small, it is usually useless to you. Although it now covers foreigners, the enforcement is not rigid.

I suggest you buy a travel insurance from your home country because that will cover everything, even if you lost yoru mobile phone!

AT the risk of changing the

AT the risk of changing the post into an insurance question ....

The problem with most travel insurance is that it is only valid for 60 or 90 days. I didn't know this for several years until one day I read the fine print. As I am normally away from OZ (not always in Zhuhai) for up to 120 days, it makes my travel insurance useless.

Has anyone found an alternative. I have emailed one of this sites advertisers twice and never received a sensible reply.

The 2 times I tried to buy simple health insurance locally they tried to sell life insurance included. I can't spend it when I am dead, so I don't want it, but the local industry doesn't seem to understand that option !!

roy - we were worried about

roy - we were worried about our travel emergency medical insurance limitations as well before moving here from Canada, then after some digging around I found out that you can ask for a longer coverage, or extension, directly with the insurance company that covers you. They will basically look into your file and age, etc.. see if you are a risk or not, and will let you know if they will approve for however long you ask for and the extra costs. We got our travel insurance to cover for 185 days (we are here for 182 days + travelling days), so it's not bad.
