I've heard that the wet
I've heard that the wet market past Jusco has really good ro...er..raw steak. Will cut it up for you. Hopefully someone knows where I'm talking about and can give you more specific directions. It's off Feng Huang Lu (香洲凤凰路)just north of Jusco.
are you referring to the
are you referring to the ChaoYang (wet) Market?
actually thinking of BBQing it... should be quite easy and tasty if the meat is good.
I used to just buy it from
I used to just buy it from Blue Angel or one of the other restaurants.
You could also do a trip to Shekou (RMB90 each way) and buy meat from the butchers in Sea World or the US shop and a couple of others nearby.
I suppose the "Blue Angel"
I suppose the "Blue Angel" is a restaurant or a steak house?? Why not just eat on site then. ;-) A trip to Shenzhen may not be practical for me, maybe i really need to go HK CitySuper for that...

Further to the comment above
Further to the comment above about the wet market past Jusco, I do buy my beef/steak there all the time. It's frozen meat and the beef tenderloin is excellent, I believe it's from New Zealand. About 178 RMB for around 3-4 lbs. They will cut it for you. I usually get them to cut one tenderloin into steak size rounds and another one in half to make roasts with. They also sell some cheeses in bulk quantities--I've bought large chunks of mozzarella there. Perfect for pizza & good quality. To get there, you go past Jusco and turn right on the street just at the pedestrian bridge (may be Feng Huang Lu, but I'm not sure of the name). I believe you make a left on the first street (I'm going from memory here)--there's a market selling fruit & veggies on the right hand corner. On the left hand street corner there's a store selling food service supplies and right beside that a store selling various bulk foods such as dried nuts (also a good place to get fresh pine nuts if you need them), spices, wine, etc. This store also has 2 or 3 large freezer doors and a sign showing the various cuts of meat. I've never had a bad cut although I do marinate my meat before cooking tenderloin anyway. Good luck!

I think I get where you are referring to. So the store is located on the street and not inside the building (the markte), right? do you remember the name of the store?
Yes, that's right, it's
Yes, that's right, it's located on the street. Don't remember the name of the store, since I believe the business card I received long ago was written entirely in Chinese. On another note, someone recently told me you may be able to buy good quality chicken wings there as well, although I've never tried. Will let you know if I decide to try.
So, enjoy your BBQ steak, if you have one. Every time we BBQ we get a complaint from a Chinese family above us and the Hua Fa security guards arrive to tell us to stop cooking. After 10 months of this however, we're still cookin'! Hope you have better luck!

Oh, how I love the irony in that statement! Thinking about all the times I wretched and wheezed and had to turn on the fan, AC and de-humidifier to get the smell of chili peppers and chou dofu out of my house! Wait..that was my wife cooking. Heh. But you get the point! Keep it up!
I love goading the locals...
that's funny... so you got
that's funny... so you got the finish all cooking before the guards come. Maybe it was because of the charcoal you used?
Yes Blue Angel is a
Yes Blue Angel is a restaurant. Some people like to cook their steak differently or serve it with different vegetables or like me with eggs and chips.
I advised about Shekou for people who dont want to use up an entry on their visa for a shopping trip to Hong Kong.
By the way for any Aussies vegemite is not available at the moment in Shelou and I am told Hong Kong -they must be waiting on a delivery.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm steak&eggs with fries; breakfast of champions! nothing better. a cholesterol bomb for sure; but damned good nevertheless.

Go to Macao, closer than HK
Go to Macao, closer than HK or SK. Inner Harbour near the new Ponte 16 Casino. Fastest way, take the ferry from WanZai, turn left (North) walk up the rivers edge. Look for Man Seng Frozen Meat and Poultry (Where I buy meats for my restaurant) OR there are several other Meat wholesalers in the same area. They will all sell "Off the shelf" to walk ups.
Tell them "English!" when you arrive so they get an English speaker to take your order if you speaky no Chinese!
Good luck!

Oh and forget the California
Oh and forget the California Red!! Go, Australian!
You better get your steak
You better get your steak soon as I just read the price of beef is going to hit the roof. Blame biofuel and the high cost of corn.
It's time to become a
It's time to become a vegetarian now.(:
Thanks for the suggestion
Thanks for the suggestion bobc. I guess it might be easier I just get it from your restaurant then. :-) Please let me know the name and location of it. Maybe with some suggestion of nice Australian too. :-) Actually I am lazy, rather than BBQ it I would rather just eat outside..
Ah well, this I can not do,
Ah well, this I can not do, sorry.
We tend to order only what we will use in the next day or so due to very limited storage, freezer, fridge space. I've no extra to sell and no place to store orders for others. I barely have room to store what I need for daily use.
Really it is best to just go there directly. A short walk up the inner harbor waterfront and you can find the places easy enough.
And the Aussie reds can be had at Park and Shop or some of the other grocers.
You are more than welcome to stop by for a Mexican meal though! Check the A to Z on the Macao side of the Expat9 web site for the address.
Adios!
I do Brazilian BBQ all the
I do Brazilian BBQ all the time and never try that at China. I think for all of the (cross the border) troubles I would just have Chinese style BBQ served outside :-)
Nest time I go Macau for Texas hold'em I will try to drop by your place. :-)
Park 'n Shop is a good idea. Maybe I can go and check out if they have any good stock or meat or wines.
Thanks for all for comments! I will feedback here for my little trials.
For the best Aussie Red wine
For the best Aussie Red wine selection the duty free at JiuZhou Gang would be hard to beat. They have Penfolds from the lower Bins all the way up to Grange and the prices are not bad either. They also have other good Australian wines and a large selection of french wines (I am not familiar with what is good in French wines so maybe JJ has to pay them a visit.
When the visa situation is more settled I must go to Macau. When is the next Grand Prix -2009?
i know many used to buy very
i know many used to buy very good raw steak from Western Restauratn of Harbor View Hotel, the foreign chef there can choose the best for u, but the price is also expensive. Here is the tel: 3322888
Duty free in No Man's land
Duty free in No Man's land between the M>ZH borders is a good place for wines as well, Ozzies included.
As for the Grand Prix it is always in November.

Yeah, we had the same problem. every time we lit up, some mysterious tenant would spend the next 15-20 watering the plants on their balcony, or washing the balcony down or some such thing. The guards always came for a look to check if the fire was under control, but never told us to stop. In the end I got fed up and bought a gas bbq from B&Q then occasionally tossed a few shredded gum leaves and twigs on the hot rocks for a bit of smoky flavour. never had a problem after the change.
As for meat, I usually bought mine from Jusco and marinated wings from Vanguard. Jusco also has an excellent flounder-like frozen fish (about 25-30 cm long) which goes excellent on a bbq especially in foil with herbs and butter.
