I am planning to come live

I am planning to come live in Zhuhai as well...but I don't even have a TEFL so I guess I will have to get one. Should I just get one there in Zhuhai itself or should I get one here and then come there?

I am a software engineer so I am hoping that after I get my fanny over there, I will try to get a software development job but I am not sure if I will get that type of work there because I don't speak Chinese.

One question I had is they say we have to work like 20 hours a week but is that really 20 hours a week of work or do we have to factor in grading homework and stuff so it comes out to be 40 hours a week? 20 hours a week seems quite mellow and I will be real happy if that is the case.

Do you recommend any good English teaching schools where I should try to get a job?

TPR is currently recruiting

TPR is currently recruiting at the moment... check their classified job ad they have submitted today.

Better get the TOEFL before coming here I think.

20 hours of teaching is quite a lot: need to count lesson preapration, marking etc...

Hope this helps and welcome to Zhuhai!

@ Rah, A number of folks

@ Rah,

A number of folks teaching in Zhuhai have gotten a TESOL from here:

You may want to contact them. But, regardless--yes...TESOL seems to be required just about everywhere thee days.

@Canrun.. Surely there must

@Canrun.. Surely there must be a cheaper way to get a TESOL. 10,000rmb seems to be a lot to pay when you're living on a teacher's salary? Does any one else have a cheaper option?

I know of people in this

I know of people in this town who are teaching, and have been teaching for a long time, without any teaching certifications or degrees. Although it is becomming more and more difficult to get those folks properly documented through the PSB and labor department, it can be done. It all depends on how much "guanxi" a particular school has.

Given all of the wierdness that has been going on lately with the visa situation, it is highly recommended that one is properly certified before they come here looking for a gig.

And, btw, going to someplace like Thailand to buy fake degrees and/or teaching credentials won't cut it any more. I know of at least one local individual who was teaching here on such "funny" credentials who now has 10 days to get out of the country. The PSB and other officials are visiting schools and checking all of the teachers' documents.

I was on the same boat. Depend what kind of unique skills you have. I got a job offer that pays around 10k yuan a month in tongjia (Software Development Center in Zhuhai) but at the same day Hong Kong company call and offer alot more. So much so that I am considering leaving zhuhai. You have to ask yourself what are you here for and is it worth it to take such pay cut? Things are not cheap around here. I am have to add if you like girls in China than you should look else where like Chongching and Sichuan (unforunately not right now).

Agree!! My advice--no no and no!! That's the solution at a certain school where I spent six years of my life and they ARE gonna get burned big-time when the Guanxi chips are called in.

Umm...yeah. Yeah.
