Hi All,
Just got back from a trip to Shangrila/LiJiang/KunMing/E Mei Shan and loved it. Now I want to do something different. This May I want to go back to Shangrila but do it by car from ZhuHai.
Anyone know where I can find road maps w/Pinyin for the trip?
I plan to buy a GPS but I like to plan ahead on paper?
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Bob

My guess is that it's going to be hard to find a map in Pin Yin... did you Google it?

Hi bobc,
I have searched long and hard for maps in China, and believe me they are not easy to find, and possibly don't exist at all in Pinyin. Buy anything you can, even if it is in Hanzi, Google Earth it heaps and buy a good GPS then load it full of co ordinates from Goole Earth.
Step 2, never trust the locals to get the instructions right - they might be, but don't trust it. In my experience the locals travel (independantly) so little that they actually have very little clue as to where point A is in relation to point B, especially as they rarely have maps themselves. This opinion might be a bit "red necked", but I have chapters of experience to back it up.
Hope you get to do it - sounds great.

Hi bobc,
I just noticed you are a pilot, so telling you how to find your way there is like telling you how to tie your shoelaces. My apologies.
But I must ask, how did you manage to go to those places anyway .... was it via work (ie flying) ?

Sorry all, PC crash. Been off the box for a while. Thanks for the input. I've found a GPS that uses Pinyin input and Spoken English directions. Thanks.
Plus I bought a pretty good road atlas. All Chinese but I will make due.
Cheers!

I was just shown "Google Earth" over the weekend, and it is amazing! It will pin point your location to a matter of meters.

Agree, Google Earth is great, and improving all the time. Interestingly I can find my car in 3 places at once.
Show most westerners and ask them to find their home, and mostly they can. I have yet to find a Chinese worker who can point out their home town.
Couple interesting articles
