I V Drip

Tags:

I had an associate who was a little fatigued yesterday and went to a doctor. She was put on an IV drip within minutes of her arrival. A few years ago I had a stomach problem as a result of bad food and was also put on the IV drip. I have read several other stories of have frequently this is used. I have great respect for the medical profession but I am now wondering if the doctors in the west are missing something. I must confess that I am not even sure what this drip contains. Perhaps it just replenishes water.

Perhaps there are some expats with some medical background who can comment on this. How can there be such a great difference in the treatments received for such seemingly minor medical matters? I mean west vs. east.

IV can be dangerous as it

IV can be dangerous as it increase the heart rate. It mostly egg white and Antibiotics. Antibiotics are the worst as it does not allow the body to develop it's own immunity against the disease. Western medicine only use these measure in serious case therefore training the body develop it's own antibodies. One can see these method are widely use in China because of the cheap labor cost. A typical doctor and nurse makes $3000 to $4000 yuan max while most newbies make around a $1000. Of course western doctor make alot more and there are also quotas in the number of doctors and nurse in each Country. I would not use these method with much frequently unless you do not plan to return to Western world. For one thing getting this treatments requires doctor approval and you can not just say "oh, they let me use this in China".

Totally

After being here for 1month,

After being here for 1month, my son fell sick. We took him to the womens & childrens hospital at Ningxi. It totally freaked me out !

All these babies in the corridors with drips going in their heads, just above their forehead !!!

It takes about 1hr for a bag of medication & some have more than 1 dose. So all these sick ppl/kids hanging around for 1-2hrs. Even if u were healthy, you'd be bound to catch something !

I refuse to put my kids on drips, actually now I avoid going to doctors here, most of the time I self-diagnose & medicate. Or if serious we go to the Hope Clinic in Macau.

The locals a lot of the time don't even know what is being dripped into them, they don't even ask. Such frequent use of antibiotics, I reckon is why virus' here are so common & strong, they've mutated to super-bugs !

The health system & conditions here is definitely the downside of being here...esp when u have kids.

We have just got over the worry of the bird flu, then influenza & now for the last week my kids have been at home as one of their friends contracted hand foot & mouth disease. So mine stayed away from preschool incase they contracted it & would spread it to others. Luckily mine have been ok & will be back to school tommorrow !! (Funny how I am more excited about the kids going back to school than they are :) )

Hi all, haveing been here

Hi all,

haveing been here for several years, i caught several bad stomach flues and or bad food syndrom, colds etc.
Most of the time they give you an IV with Suguar (Glucose) and salt. That is to keep the fluids up in the body .. at least for flue like symptoms. Nothing to be scared about as long the needle is clean and the medicine is not fake or tainted.

If that helps , i dont know but i am still alive and recovered every time. So cant be too bad.

And remember one thing .. the bigger the needle the better it helps hehehehe

Cheers,
Peter

There are a lot of fakes in

There are a lot of fakes in China but in medicine there are very strict rules specially in the hospital and pharmacies. The license to sell medicine is very expensive so any fakes drug trace back to the store triggers automatic suspension, and multiple violation will lead the termination of licenses. Secondly in hospitala, wrong with death due to negligence is punishable by death. First and last amendment of China is that you have rights to fast and speedy execution. A bill for the first bullet will be sent to your next of kin, but if the first one don't kill you the second one is free of charge.

Thanks Razorsedge. I will

Thanks Razorsedge. I will likely avoid opening a medical practise in this country!

This policy was applied to a very highly-placed government minister who was convicted of accepting over 6 million RMB in bribes to allow untested, and sometimes fake, medicines to be distributed to hospitals which cost the lives of about 15 people in China. These deaths and their causes were widely and extensively reported by HKTV and CCTV in late 2002 or early 2003. A speedy execution was indeed the case. He was convicted last May, and executed last July. My only disappointment in the aforementioned execution was that those who offered and paid the bribes were not also held equally accountable.

This is a policy which not only applies to those convicted of negligent homicide, but also to those high government officials who are convicted of serious corruption in real estate, government contracts, etc.

This is a policy that I, not only wholeheartedly agree with and support, but I wish it would be adopted by many western countries, including the USA!

@Canrun... that last post

@Canrun... that last post was Golden!

My advice for any one living in China, find yourself a Chinese Doctor who is high up on the chain and make friends with him/her... it will make those visits to the doctor that little bit easier... as they say in any country "it's not what you know.. it's who know!"

My son had to spend a few

My son had to spend a few days in hospital and suffer those IV drips too. Don't really like the hospital situation around here. He got a bit better but not 100%.

We did go to a local herbal doctor ( close friend of the family ) and hey what, my son got better. So there are fakes but there are also those who know a lot and can help
