Yeah, I have always been able to get on Youtubeand CNN. But this morning I tried to go to both of these sites and cant access. It is really frustrating. If they are going to block you from getting news about the situation in Tibet right now, they shouldnt block youtube completely! Just block any searches related to Tibet on youtube. Heck I dont care! I can always find hundreds of other sites with news about tibet. (MSNBC.com) for ex.

They are also blocking related stories and news videos, except those from CCTV or xinhua, of course, on MSNBC; or at least they were this morning

The reason they block the whole site is because they're lazy. Just blocking selected, related stories takes some effort; much more effort than they are willing to expend. Its much easier to just block access to the "offending" site.

BEIJING (AP) - Internet users in China were blocked from seeing YouTube.com on Sunday after dozens of videos about protests in Tibet appeared on the popular U.S. video Web site.

The blocking added to the communist government's efforts to control what the public saw and heard about protests that erupted Friday in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, against Chinese rule.

Access to YouTube.com, usually readily available in China, was blocked after videos appeared on the site Saturday showing foreign news reports about the Lhasa demonstrations, montages of photos and scenes from Tibet-related protests abroad.

There were no protest scenes posted on China-based video Web sites such as 56.com, youku.com and tudou.com.

The Chinese government has not commented on its move to prevent access to YouTube. Internet users trying to call up the Web site were presented with a blank screen.

Chinese leaders encourage Internet use for education and business but use online filters to block access to material considered subversive or pornographic.

Foreign Web sites run by news organizations and human rights groups are regularly blocked if they carry sensitive information. Operators of China-based online bulletin boards are required to monitor their content and enforce censorship.

China has at least 210 million Internet users, according to the government, and is expected to overtake the United States soon to have the biggest population of Web surfers.

Beijing tightened controls on online video with rules that took effect Jan. 30 and limited video-sharing to state-owned companies.

Regulators backtracked a week later, apparently worried they might disrupt a growing industry, and said private companies that were already operating legally could continue. They said any new competitors will be bound by the more stringent restrictions.

Well, as most have noticed YouTube has been blocked since yesterday by the GFW! But this morning I try to access my Yahoo mail and it is now blocked, along with all Yahoo News articles! Is anyone else having this problem or is it just a "Huge" coincidence that the gov. is blockin many sites now and I just so happen to not be able to access my Yahoo mail for some reason? Thanks

As I write this from the Hong Kong airport, I am able to reflect on all those times that I wanted to curse Hu Jintao and his merry band of bu--hers a blue streak for the all the aggravation the GWF has caused us all over the years. I thank my lucky stars (red, natch) that I will never, ever...ever have to put up with that bull--it again. I wish all of you the best just trying to get through the day and get your work done.

For me I find Yahoo and Youtube so bloated with crap that if they were never available again I wouldn't miss them.

What drives me nuts is when researching via the net, half the time the top responses from the search engines is wikipedia ... and of course that's blocked as well.

Gotta ask ... what the hell are they trying to achieve, or is it someones pet power trip.

Well, today I can actually access my Yahoo Mail! Hope i'm not speaking too soon though.

It seems "the Australian" is also blocked. For those of you not from the sunburnt country this is our equivelent of the BBC for sensible and informed comment. Not the first time it's been blocked either.

Back to the subject, all westerners know what happened in Tiananmen square many years ago. Try finding a local you knows ! They don't. The only local I have ever met who knew anything about it was a guide we hired to show us around the Forbidden City.

On that basis the censorship works.

Whilst "we" find it annoying, especially when we want to communicate with the rest of the world ... I am not going to say the system here is any worse than anywhere else. It's just different. At least we aren't subjected to the crap of TV re elections and presidential campaigning.

BTW, I tried BBC, BRIETBART, IHT, TIMESONLINE, ESLCAFE, LOSTLAOWAI, YAHOO NEWS....they r all accessible from here.

As i know, the GFW filter those site by the packet transmit to your computer which contained those "key word", if any "key word" being detected, the ISP will simply block the site for 10-30 minute depends on "Don't know". u may or may not get your access back by disconnect and reconnect your internet. Its full automatically and not by any manual works. Only a few site been blocked forever, like those "FL4F"...(4 is an english letter).

This is why google.com being randomly blocked from here and google.cn have no problem at all. because google US refuse to filter those key word.

People may feel like those site has been blocked forever probably cause by there are multiple people in your area are trying to access the page contain key word at busy hour. so those site will be continuity blocked for couple of hours.

The solution is use TOR as a anonymous proxy or VNN make an encrypt tunnel to a computer outside China.

I recommend you use TOR+foxyproxy and put all those news site into the whitelist then no more blocking at all...a fresh completely bright new world can be seen from your computer?....lol

Its not really our problem or business and we can do nothing but sit back,justify this or that,sympathise, but get on with our own life/lives ..Sounds harsh, but its reality !

Roy... I do not know if I would call myself technically savy ..hehehe but thanks.. this link will take you to DAP which includes the video accelerator free of charge.. there are a few glitches with it but it seems to work 99% of the time..

The DAP version of the software is not the fasted downloader out there but I guess it depends on how much downloading you are going to do.

A footnote.. it is better to open the video accelerator first before you open youtube.. do not ask me why!!! umm and it seems that the free upgrades are now working for other media players as well such a VEOH and YouKu... any questions ask I will see if I can answer..LOL

YouTube has been unblocked for about 3 or 4 days now. However, if you try to view any "suggestive" videos about certain "events". It will stop you dead in your tracks. I tried to type in "DL", yes, only "DL", and not only did my YT stop feeding, but I had to turn off and re-start my computer to re-access YT.

Don't know about other sites or links, as I get everything I need from YT. But I know Wikipedia is unaccessible, and I heard FaceBook is blocked (don't know for sure). I need access to YT to see what's going on in The U.S. elections, ummm, I mean...Oh, nevermind.

I sure hope we're allowed to talk about what we're not allowed to talk about.

I've had not problems accessing facebook, and I don't use proxy.

I hope I don't get in trouble for doing this but it's not the firewall. It's the DNS server. China or China's ISPs have some wack up DNS server. A lot of sites have problem such as yahoo when it try to redirect sites to it's China sites. I use the all mighty 4.2.2.1 DNS server provided freely by Verizon and can get on youtube and facebook.

I actually tried to get in to BBC UK news today and much to my surprise got in with no problem.

That's unusual! All BBC sites have been blocked for, at least the last 7 years. Good Deal!!
