After living in China for 7 years, I think canrun will be an "expat" in Florida. So the question is, will he be a Florida basher or an orange hugger?

I lived for 9 years in the part of Florida where canrun is now. Only about 50km from where he is, there is an agricultural community called “Plant City”. This time every year they have their annual “Strawberry Festival”. For the other 11 ½ months of the year, the most popular entertainment is sitting on the front porch and watching the cars rust. Good luck canrun.

From a Floridian.

There's much more to Florida than Disneyland, Daytona, and alligators. Sometimes you gotta get off the beaten path to find the really cool stuff. If you want to know about events, things to do, places to see; tell me what you're interested in and I will follow up with links, info, and advice.

Here are just a few upcoming events that are well worth going to.

Sarasota Medieval Fair (my home town)

The Florida Folk Festival (not just a bunch of hicks sitting around drinking Budweiser and talking about trucks).

Best part of Florida (as a tourist) is without doubt Kennedy Space Centre.

One can find Crocodiles, Car races, Disneyland and assorted theme parks, beaches, humidity and oranges just about anywhere, but there is only one Kennedy Space Centre.

I missed seeing a night launch of a Shuttle by about 6 hours ... It would have been great to have seen that.

In the very early seventies,

In the very early seventies, shortly before I got out of the Navy, I happen watch one of the night launches of one of the Saturn V lunar shots. It was spectacular to say the least. It was later reported that the particular night shot I saw could be seen as far north as the Carolinas, and as far west as New Orleans.

As you may know, Florada is as flatt as a snooker table. Both day and night shuttle launches can be clearly seen from the Tampa/St Pete area. Of course, the night shots are the best.

That's okay orrin, we

That's okay orrin, we Floridians generally pronounce it "Flor-da" (two-syllables), while the further away you get, people tend to stretch it out into three syllables, "Flor-ee-da", so you're in the clear. I know you're talking about spelling, not pronunciation. But oh well, it's related.

Haha! I just now came across this thread! (I very, very rarely read the community part due to my disdain for the word association link. Ha!--Why do I still come here in the first place??!) ;)

Anyhow, life in Florida is good--except for the fact that my wife cannot find "authentic" Hunan/Sichuan food ANYWHERE! I myself am actually having a 'hunkering' for some La zi ji ding. SOL, it seems.

That being said, got a job teaching with a company called Inlingua, which is all over the world (but no schools in China. Franchises anyone??!!)

I'm most looking forward to Master's weekend coming up...it's been eight years since I've watched it live.

And yes, Earthling, as I'm from south Georgia it is and always has been pronounced Flor'da. (If anyone here has ever been to the Floribama bar, I'm buying rounds next time I'm back in town!)

Off for my third Corona of the night! ;)
