Cycling tour around Macau

Tags:

Will it be possible for some Expats to get together for a cycling tour around Macau ? i am sure it will give us all a different picture of that place ... if someone with the knowledge of the routes and lanes joins us there will be nothing like it ..

question is :

* Will there be interested people ?
* Can we take our Bikes across border (Via wanzai border ) ?
* If we can't get our Bikes across border .. is there a place where we all can rent bikes for a day in Macau?
* Are there some expats in Macau who will like to join us?( with some help the route can be more clearly planned)

I guess this event can be organized any weekend .. day and time can be discussed ... more people the better ..

Bikes, cameras and a group of friends is that interesting ?

Great idea Anu, I am keen as mustard. I have seen many people take there bicycles across the border at gongbei & wanzai. So i am sure it won't be too big of a hassle. When do you want to do this ? Maybe we can ride to Taipa and have lunch at a portugese restaurant, in the back streets I know around there.

Do unto others, as others do unto you - me

Anu: It is a great idea. I am still a bit uneasy with the traffic there, I know the road system in Macau well as I used to drive there. If you like, I can help you map out a route. A trip like this must be well planned ahead, such as medical and communication support etc. Alternatives? How about a walking tour of Macau's historic sites, lunch in an authentic Macanese Restaurant (I call it Macanese, as a lot of the dishes offered in Macau do not exist in Portugal).

I'm ready for this biking

I'm ready for this biking adventure! Has it already happened? Am I too late? Let me know!

Anu...

As I know, is not permited to cross by bicycle any bridge between Macau and Taipa without Police permission and Supervising as well from Taipa to Coloane Island.
I will check it with some friends and I will let you know all the proceders.
If you plan to Cycling in Macau, may it will not be a big problem, but need to check it before due to Bikes licence.
Let me check and i will be back to you.

Yep, that's right. I have

Yep, that's right. I have been with a old friend from Trafic Police, and he says what I suspect. You need to apply at IACM here:
http://gb.iacm.gov.mo/iacm2006_s.htm or OP department here: http://www.dssopt.gov.mo/en/index.php
permission for a group to Cycling in Macau and this departments they will ask Trafic Police Department for opinion and agreement. In case of crossing any bridge for sure and for security reasons must be followed by one or two Police in Motorcycle. Depends of how many they will be. It is not complex the process. Is like a formality.
I am sorry Anu but i know where to rent bikes, before in Taipa Island can rent bikes and play in Taipa Island, but this it was several years ago. For the moment i don't know where you can rent bikes, but i will check it and be back to you soon. To take your own bike, just go on that way, ask permission and it will not be a problem

Hope it helps.

I have been taking my bike

I have been taking my bike into Macau a couple of times this week just to work out the kinks. Meet up with a Macau bike shop and touring club. Should have many details shored up soon. Since we are not doing a Macy's parade I think the less Bureaucracy the better. Of the three bridges one can be crossed on foot.

Anu, I have a spare bike and will lend it to you.

This is going no where

This is going no where unless someone take the bull by the horn and ink a plan to paper. Since I probably have more time (semi-retired), and rides every day (40-60KM), i will start the process. Everyone should put in their two cents worth on what what kind of experience they would like to get from this trip. I propose the following;

1. The date to be Saturday, October 27.

2. The trip is limited to Macau only. There is plenty to do and see there. We can do a special Taipa trip next time. This way we won't have to deal with the issue of crossing bridges. A focused trip would make it physically possible to all riders.

3. We will make this a "Gray Line" tour covering the most popular must see sites; Senado Square, Ruins of St. Paul, A-Ma Temple, Macau Tower.

4. We will make a grocery stop at New Yaohao for our cheeses, steaks and cold cuts.

5. We will make at lease two rest stops, one in Starbucks during mid morning and lunch at a VERY special local Italian restaurant. A bike shop and cycle club is right next door to the restaurant and we can meet some of the local riders.

6. A large crowd with bikes is hard to manage and possibly unsafe. Let's keep this ride to a maximum of six riders. We can take reservations for alternates and future trips.

If we leave around 8:30AM we should be back by 3:30PM, plenty of time to do our evening stuff.

Feel free to leave comments, changes, route suggestions, things to do, places to eat. We might make this a monthly tour and add events and destinations as we go.

Please register with me privately and I will put you on the participant list.

IT IS SET FOR SATURDAY THE

IT IS SET FOR SATURDAY THE 27TH!

I spend Tuesday the 23 mapping out, i think, a very interesting ride/tour of Macau. Some of the confusions about traffic, routes, and destinations all got worked out. Here are the highlights of our tour;

1. The old Chinese quarters where opium dens and bordellos use to be the norm. It is now a popular destination to Chinese and HK tourist.

2. Centro (Senado Square). We will get our Starbucks and Hagen Daz fix here. Ladies seem to like to buy cosmetics and perfumes here.

3. Ruins of St. Paul. We will walk from Centro to the most famous site in Macau.

4. Macau Tower. We will ride next to the coast to this new tourist attraction that is taller than the Eiffel tower. Along the way we will pass by popular local hang outs and interesting international restaurants (i found a Taco place). We may have lunch at the famous 360 rotating buffet restaurant. We will also check out the adrenalin rush events offered (bungee, and other suicide jumps).

5. Barra / Matsu Temple. This is temple is older than Macau. We will burn our incense and make our peace.

6. New Yaohan Department Store. We will stop briefly and shop at the supermarket to pick up any chesses or cured meats.

Back to border corssing around 3:30PM.

WE HAVE TWO CANCELLATIONS. ANYONE INTERESTED IN THIS RIDE PLEASE EMAIL ME DIRECT.

Thanks again Peter for organizing everything and lending your bike. All details were planned and the tour was smooth and fun time. Was nice meeting all you guys...and Bonnae, let me know when you are heading for bike shop...
If it'll be possible to go to Taipa island later, count me in for that, too.

I second those remarks.
