ATM Card scam
Tags:
ATM card scams have been increasing in Zhuhai. Just yesterday evening a friend of mine had his card stolen out of the bank of China ATM next to the Rude by a group of scam artists after the card got stuck in the machine.
In short: At the time the card was still in the machine several chaps who were lingering in the shadows came up and said that the number next to the machine should be called to get the card back. The guy who answered the phone insisted on being given the pin code - which my friend obviously did not do. The guy on the phone got increasingly annoyed and kept calling back insisting that he has to have the pin code in order to block the card!
Having heard from others, these incidents are happening more and more and some of them can get very aggressive, with the target person being seriously physically attacked.
So do be careful and if it happens call your bank's hotline to cancel your card immediately.

Thanks Geronimo for the tip.
Thanks Geronimo for the tip. I think it would be advisable to use common sense around ATM machines and always ask for ID. Never give out your personal info or your pin #! I suggest using the ATM machines at the BOC next to Yindo (Jasper) Hotel, there are plenty of survelliance cameras and there's always a security guard standing near by.
Thanks for the info. Will
Thanks for the info. Will keep an eye open to it next time.

Using bank card in dark or even in isolated corners can be risky .. by the amount of people coming in zhuhai everyday .. i guess precaution is better than cure ... :)

Well hasn't happened to me
Well hasn't happened to me yet. I usually get in a big arguement with my credit card provider as they are a bunch of t*****. Well if they get too close to your liking don't pick a fight. Run. Much safer if they are with a few.
I only use mu bank card in the BOC in Gong Bei. There's allways a security guard or 2 in the area.
The other ATMs in Zhuhai
The other ATMs in Zhuhai that I use are the BOC one at the fery terminal and the one in the shopping centre in Jida in a pinch.
Fortunately there is also an ATM out in Pingsha and I feel much safer using it because I can have people I know with me if I choose.
In Shekou HSBC have set up an ATM that is only for foreign cards so when you are going to use it it is obvious if there are "undersirables" nearby.
Regarding the airline tickets I would just say e-ticket because I haven't had an actual ticket for a while now - just the receipt. Most times I travel within China I only have on-board luggage so I do the self seat allocation from the machine. It works great you just key in your passport number.
Yes, most of us are "street
Yes, most of us are "street wise"! But you never know, especially when well planned.
However just this week it was reported that a local chap in a similar situation had RMB140,000.- debited from his account! He fell for the scam and gave his bank code and id card # to the bad guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Depending on the case some banks may pay up to 30% back.
Although as I was told even if you get robbed in the bank itself in broad day light, it's your own responibility!
Guards don't often come to one's rescue either!
Recently a chap in another Province got stabbed in one of those little ATM rooms - he had no money on him and unfortunately didn't survive either!
Unfortunately these things happen all over the world!
