To Sirius

To Sirius

Farewell o Sirius Erelendu
the darkness falls, and winter draws nigh
the veil in shade, and tears in the sky
in gloom I seek an undying light

When night falls I dreamed thy days in bliss
in sunlight and in the summer breeze;
while now in freezing wind the fallen leaves flew
and the fallen tears wetted the empty tomb

Lo! Beyond the mist a light there shines
out through the shadow, the star alights
bringing a warmth, a strength, and trust unbroken
and kindles a fadeless hope in battle nights.

(Erelendu is a word I made up in Sindarin, which means'lonely star at night')
