The Fabulous Disappearance of 'Doc of Zhuhai'
Tags:
In the last few hours of Monday night, flight AF101 departed Canton to pay a brief visit on Charles De Gaulle. It was a typical Monday night, much like any other, except the flight this night carried three furtive figures and two cats, black cats, caged so as not to cross the paths of unwitting others, 'ere the shades of Friday and the Number Thirteen, should raise their unlucky heads. Yet such is the power of cats, even caged, and drugged into near a stupor of silence, that these three figures drew the attention of unseen powers. The wheels of "The Machine' had begun to turn and our trio were destined to enmesh with that unwieldy Juggernaut, known as 'China Customs' and it's companion, Plausible Ineptitude" a.k.a "The Check-in Counter Quality Service Program."
Ok, I wont drag this out any further, suffice to say, the girl at the counter forgot to give us the relevant paperwork for taking our cats through the customs inspection station. Fifteen minutes later we were waved through and had to immediately board the plane, a mere moment before last call, didn't even get time for a beer. I must say though that the customs crew were very friendly and pleasant, the check-in counter girl made a show of telling everyone who'd listen, that we'd forgotten to take the papers, or words to that effect. In the end, no drama at all.
Why am I leaving? My wife Janine has accepted a new posting in Hung Yen, near Hanoi in Vietnam. The position is initially for two years and we are moving our entire family there, as of May. In the interim, Luka, Janine and I are spending some time in Germany before departing to Vietnam. Our two cats, at this stage, will be coming with us - we can't bear to leave them behind. They're both 12 years old and a big part of our family. So that's the skinny. Will we ever comeback? I'll be dropping in around mid-May to finalize shipment of our belongings. After that, we just don't know at this stage - but let's face it, holidays are reasonably frequent and Zhuhai is roughly an hour and a half away (well, Guangzhou, Macau or HK).
Best wishes to one and all, Thanks for the fellowship, support and the occasional disagreement. Good Luck, hope you find what ever it is you might be looking for.

Now both you and canrun are
Now both you and canrun are gone. You both seemed to be such a part of Zhuhai's furniture, it's come as a shock to read of your departures. I just presumed that one day we would have the chance to meet (and perhaps we have without ever knowing it). I guess that means I should get out more !!
When I was a newcomer to Zhuhai the information you passed on was (and still is) of great help. The chance to "ask Doc" will be sorely missed.
Thank you and all the best to you and your family in Vietnam.

Hi Doc, it hurts somewhat when I think of saying goodbye to you. It was such a sweet memory taking photos with you on the tours, on the island, on the street and at bars. You know I'll be missing you and Janine and Luka. Thanks for all the warm memories you've left behind. I'll be here all the time in case you come back or drop by.

Just passing, saw the light on, thought I'd drop in...
Hi folks, thanks very much for your kind words. I will from time to time drop in a throw-away comment here and there.
Hanoi already has a thriving expat site called The Hanoian, so I'll be focussing more on the photography side of things, so you might see one or two contributions from me on the LENZ forum.
For those with an interest in weather, when we landed in Paris, it was snowing as we stepped out the door of the plane. The day after, we had an inch of snow in Hamburg. What a sudden and chily shock.
Cheers to all from Janine, Luka and me
regards,
T. Tempest. DCA
