Shamian- A Colonial Remnant
Tags:
I just came back from a two day business trip to Guangzhou, one of the mega cities here in China. I had the chance to visit and even stay overnight in "Sha Mian" which is a tinny island in the heart of Guangzhou surrounded by a small river.
It was a strange feeling to walk among those big colonial mansions that were build more then 100 years ago by the American ,German, French and Japanese Colonists. Since I'm from Germany most of the buildings and their architectural style looked quite familiar. But to see all those buildings here in the heart of the city in Guangzhou did gave me a strange feeling.
It seemed as time has stood still on this small island. Where as just a few meters away Chinese commerce and life was puzzling. Several years ago I visited the City of Qingdao, and I remember experiencing a similar feeling. Also there they have many old buildings pretty much with the same style and architectural flare.
If you do have a chance to visit these cities, don't miss to have a look. Maybe you will experience similar feelings.

I too experienced the same
I too experienced the same feeling when I made my first visit to the US Consulate on Shamain Island a few years ago. When you cross the bridge onto the island, it's almost like stepping from China into a European city. Is Lucy's restaurant still there very close to the White Swan hotel?

Yes, the restaurant is still
Yes, the restaurant is still there. I passed by it on my visit.
