Driven...

I've driven the 600 turns of Maui without falling off the cliff. Have cruised along the rage filled highways of LA. Fully exhausted a little VW engine on the autobahn. None of those, however, can match the excitement of driving in Zhuhai/China.

It's not always a white knuckle experience but just have to fully alert at all times.

Right of way: Everyone has right of way all the time! I think the size of the vehicle ultimately decides who gets it though. Cars will bravely pull out onto incoming traffic - sometimes two or three lanes of traffic.

Yielding: don't need it. See above.

The "Shield": If you are stuck yielding to incoming traffic, have no worries. A car from behind will zip by you onto traffic thus giving you a shield to proceed.

Night Vision: some people have it, some people don't. Watch out for cars at night that don't turn on their lights.

High Beams: these are the folks that don't have night vision. They'll drive with their blinding xenon high beams on all the time.

Buses: Top of the food chain. Stay far away unless you drive a bus also.

Taxis: Fairly high up on the heirarchy, not because of their size but because of their agility. They can be 2 lanes to the right of you but will still u-turn at their will.

Fast Lane: They are all fast and slow at the same time. See obstacles.

Exits: If it's not your exit on the highway, stay away from it. Lots of people miss exits on the highway and will reverse their way back.

Must say cheeese: If you see a sign with a camera on it. Slam on the brakes to half the speed limit. If you are unsure of the sign you just saw, just leave some distance to the car in front of you.

Lane drifters: try not to cruise along side by side with another vehicle. Because they'll want to switch onto your lane no matter what.

Obstacles: Oh, there are so many....

-Humans- mostly found outside of the zebra crossings. Not too familiar with the laws of physics, so they aren't scared of cars. Best thing to do is to have a car about a car length ahead of you - so they can do the recon for you.

-Bikes- not so bad since they are usually going in the same direction as you. But the ones to watch out for are the ones riding towards you.

-Tractors- these guys are quite deceiving from a distance. Usually found in the "fast" lane.

Driving is still fun though.

Your comment about right of

Your comment about right of way is what I call "The law of the large". That should explain itself. I don't drive here because I fear that I would commit a "road rage" crime within minutes of getting behind the wheel.

Hahaha! Great post Mek!

Hahaha! Great post Mek! :)

How did you get your license here in China?
I'd like to have a go at driving - it's very akin to driving on the North Circular Road in London - one of my favourite former past-times!

The Law of the Large is right Orrin - who has the largest balls! Hahahaha!

I was driven to Doumen by a regular taxi driver the other day in record time - some of the finest driving I have seen in my 8 months here. Putting the taxi in any available gap, dodging cameras and pedestrians with surgical accuracy, working the gearbox PROPERLY - making the engine really sing all the way there. I was so impressed.

When we arrived, I told him how chuffed I was. He responded with 'Gaahhh, I didn't know you could speak Chinese! I finish work soon and didn't think you'd be able to understand me!'

Hahahaha!

The only rule I've ever heard was 'don't hit the object in front of you'... seems like a reason to drive in reverse to me! ;)

I got it from Lisa doing

I got it from Lisa doing licenses under the A-Z section here a couple of months ago. It took a while but totally hassle-free.

The road rage goes away after the 1000th time you say "WTF!!". You will definitely grow numb to what happens on the road and will become more patient in the process. Maybe I've grown some during that time...it could explain the funny walk I've been having :)

No use tail-gating or cutting people off due to rage because everyone else does that anyhow. Can't change a thing so might as well adapt.

Apparently, they don't label

Apparently, they don't label hazmat loads here. How else could they NOT know the identity of the spilled chemical?
