My wife and I just came back from having our Valentines Day dinner at the Double Star. I must say that I was quite pleasantly surprised. Both the food and the service were excellent!
I had the Ribeye steak which was the best steak I have had in Zhuhai. My wife ordered the King prawns and cod. I didn’t sample the prawns, but I did taste the cod. Believe me, it was real cod. I’m from Boston, so I’m suppose to know these things.
All in all, we had a delightful dining experience there. It was an excellent value. I highly recommend the Double Star Café.
Dining at the Double Star Cafe was an interesting experience and was it not for the discount offered to Ferry users we would not have gone. Nice place friendly manager attentive staff pleasant surroundings. Wine choice limited and expensive no local offerings which is a shame. In HKG this is a mass market restaurant chain where you can get good food at average prices but this does not translate to Zhuhai. The chef is quick and pretty in his presentation but actual taste and freshness are missing. We sampled the double King Shrimp with spaghetti nicely plated but the pasta was hardly “al dente” and there was very little sauce our other choice was a steak with a side of fries. The fries sorry potato wedges came before the steak accompanied by tartar sauce definitely not “Hellmann’s” and when the meat came it was nicely laid out but it lacked flavor. No excuses for a warmed over piece of meat that should have been and could have been better.
Seriously why try to bring mid grade to Zhuhai and pass it off as high-end? Such a great looking place should be using the chef’s talents to offer Fresh food and with the sea food street not far away I’d recommend dropping the fancy color menu in favor of a chalk board and daily fresh specials.
A day later we visited La Bonne Heure in Macau and what a difference and for exactly the same money a fabulous fresh sea-bass and a delicious pork loin cooked in a mustard sauce washed down with a scrumptious house white wine from Australia. I do recommend Bonne Heure just off Senado Square for good European style cuisine prepared by a superb Japanese chef.
