Rails, bridges, wide roads coming

WITH about 60 per cent of the 116.3km Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Rapid Mass Transit (RMT) completed, it looks like the railway could be in operation next year.
Construction commenced in December 2005. There will be six stations in Zhuhai and a terminal in Gongbei. It will take only 47 minutes to go to Guangzhou by RMT.

Freight railroad
THE Guangzhou-Zhuhai Railroad will meet Grade-A railway standards to connect the high iron network. According to the design approved on February 2, it will deal primarily with freight. The 189.367km railroad will pass through Guangzhou, Foshan, Jiangmen and Zhuhai, the latter of which will encompass Doumen, Zhuhai West and Gaolan Port passenger stations. A large storage yard will be built at Gaolan Port.
With total investment of 13.16 billion yuan ($1.88 billion), of which Zhuhai will be responsible for 50 per cent of the capital base, 5.26 billion yuan ($751 million), and Guangzhou Railway Group Corp, Guangdong Railway Construction Investment Group and Jiangmen City will share the other half. The railway is to be completed in four years

Zhugang Expressway
THE Zhugang Expressway, which is 61.4km long with dual four lanes, will be the first expressway to Gaolan Port, Jinwan District. It will connect the West Coast and Jiangmen-Zhuhai expressways and Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway West Guangzhou-Zhuhai Section. The 26km first-phase, from Gaolan Port to West Coast Expressway, will undergo construction next year.

North Airport Expressway
THE 26.4km North Airport Expressway, with dual four lanes, will become the major route linking Zhuhai Airport and the West Coast Expressway while connecting Jinwan and Doumen downtown areas when it comes into operation in 2010.

Zhuhai Avenue Renovation
A KEY artery connecting eastern and western urban clusters in the city, Zhuhai Avenue will be reconstructed into a dual eight-way throughway. The 11km first phase, from Qianshan Bridge to Zhuhai Bridge, is in the final planning stage.

Jinding-Hengqin Throughway
RUNNING from Jinding in Tangjiawan Town, a 34km dual six-lane throughway will reach Hengqin Island via Fenghuang Mountain and the downtown area, linking to the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway in the north. The 18km first phase between Jinfeng and Cuiping roads is to come into use in 2010. The Fenghuang Mountain Highway Tunnel is under construction.

Jinhai Bridge
TO be constructed up to dual six-lane expressway standards, Jinhai Bridge is the first-phase of the Jinhai Road project starting from Hengqin Island to Gaolan Port. Preliminary work is under way and it is to be completed in 2009.

Hengqin West Line Section
THE 11.5km Guangzhou-Zhuhai West Line Zhuhai Highway-Hengqin Section project is part of the planned Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway under the state expressway network programme. With dual four lanes, the section is to connect Zhuhai Highway and Jinhai Road. Preliminary work is under way and the Guangzhou-Zhuhai West Line Zhongshan Yuehuan-Zhuhai Highway Section will come into operation by the end of this month.

S272 Section
THE S272 Highway from Zhuhai Airport to Huxin Road Intersection, Doumen District, commenced construction in October 2007 and is expected to come into use by November. The section from Huxin Road Intersection to Baijiao Town, Doumen District, was begun last March and will be completed in 2010. A fast access road from Doumen and Jinwan to urban areas, the project will greatly improve the traffic situation upon completion.

S365 Renovation
THE first phase of the S365 renovation project, or the Second Jing’an Bridge project, is under preliminary preparation with construction to commence by the end of this year. It is expected to upgrade the traffic facilities in downtown Doumen and its towns.
