AN environmental impact assessment of the Zhuhai LNG (liquefied natural gas) project was approved by the National Bureau of Environmental Protection, according to a source from the Guangdong Chamber of Commerce of Petroleum & Gas. As the second large-scale LNG initiative in Guangdong after Shenzhen Dapeng, the Zhuhai scheme will strengthen gas supply to Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Foshan, Jiangmen and Zhuhai itself. The first of the three-phase project will cost 8.6 billion yuan ($1.23 billion) and lead to import of over 3 million tonnes of gas per year.

The project has been listed among coastal LNG planning projects initiated by the National Development & Reform Commission (NDRC). The gas supply is to reach 3.07 million tonnes during Phase I, 6.61 and 10.87 million tonnes per year during Phases II and III respectively.

The proposed LNG terminal will be located at Gaolan Port, and pipelines will connect Gaolan with Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Foshan, Jiangmen and Zhuhai. Residential, commercial and corporate users can expect safe, clean and cheaper natural gas once the facility is in operation.

It was suggested by specialists in the business that, if the project followed the concept of the Shenzhen Dapeng scheme by signing a fixed-term gas supply agreement with overseas suppliers, the price could be even lower than that of current LPG and pipeline gas.
