Dolphin base coming

THE cornerstone was laid for the Pearl River Estuary Chinese White Dolphin National Nature Reserve Qi’ao Base last Tuesday. Li Zhujiang, director of the Guangdong Provincial Marine & Fishery Department; Vice Mayor Jin Zhanyang, and officials and residents of Qi’ao Island took part in the initiation ceremony.
The Chinese white dolphin or Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin is a marine mammal species with high intelligence. An endangered species in China, it has been designated for first-class protection. It is mainly distributed in southeast coastal water from the Yangtze River Estuary in the north and Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong and Guangxi in the south. With 1,000 to 1,200 white dolphins, the Peal River Estuary is the habitat with the largest number in China. It has important scientific value in military, medical, species evolution, biodiversity and other fields.
